Introduction
Melanotan I is closely associated with the peptide later developed as afamelanotide, a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Afamelanotide activates the melanocortin-1 receptor and influences eumelanin production.
Research Areas
Mechanisms
Melanocortin-1 receptor activation influences melanin synthesis pathways in melanocytes.
Human Evidence
Controlled human trials have investigated afamelanotide in erythropoietic protoporphyria. Earlier human research also examined melanotan I and melanotropic analogues in pigmentation and photoprotection.
Human research is presented for scientific and educational context only. Elev8 Health does not recommend that its products be used for anything other than laboratory research purposes, and does not recommend human or veterinary use of any kind.
Preclinical Evidence
Melanocortin receptor pharmacology has been characterized extensively in laboratory research.
Limitations
SCENESSE is an FDA-approved 16 mg controlled-release implant for a specific indication involving erythropoietic protoporphyria. An Elev8 10 mg lyophilized research vial is not the SCENESSE implant, and the two must not be treated as interchangeable. Earlier pigmentation studies were small and provide limited long-term safety characterization.
Safety & Regulatory
Approved labeling applies to the SCENESSE implant only. Elev8 research material is not FDA approved.
Conclusion
The melanocortin literature is scientifically established, while the approved-product evidence is tightly bound to a specific implant formulation and indication.
