Introduction
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a fundamental cellular coenzyme involved in redox metabolism, ATP production, mitochondrial function, DNA repair, sirtuin activity and cellular signaling. Interest in NAD+ biology has expanded substantially because NAD metabolism changes with aging and multiple disease states.
Biological Role
NAD+ functions as an essential cofactor in energy metabolism and as a substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair and cellular signaling.
Research Areas
Mechanisms
NAD-related research investigates cofactor availability, mitochondrial bioenergetics and NAD-consuming enzyme activity across cellular systems.
Human Evidence
Human research on NAD-boosting strategies is much more developed for precursors such as NR and NMN than for direct nasal NAD+. Human trials generally demonstrate that several precursor strategies can increase NAD-related biomarkers, while clinical outcomes remain mixed and indication-specific.
Human research is presented for scientific and educational context only. Elev8 Health does not recommend that its products be used for anything other than laboratory research purposes, and does not recommend human or veterinary use of any kind.
Preclinical Evidence
A 2026 study examining intranasal NAD investigated olfactory stem-cell differentiation and recovery in experimental anosmia models. This is predominantly preclinical research.
Delivery Format Research
Intranasal drug delivery is being investigated broadly as a potential route for nose-to-brain delivery. Delivery-route reviews describe the scientific rationale for nasal administration research, without establishing outcomes for any specific intranasal NAD+ formulation.
Limitations
Preclinical olfactory findings are not evidence that nasal NAD+ improves neurological health in humans, and biomarker increases observed with precursors do not establish clinical benefit.
Safety & Regulatory
No intranasal NAD+ product is FDA approved. Research material is offered for laboratory research use only.
Conclusion
NAD+ is among the most extensively studied cellular coenzymes, while intranasal NAD+ specifically remains an early research area warranting further investigation.
